(2018、2019、2020、2024)。 Minhee Kim expresses a nostalgia for the futurism of the 1980s. Her works predominantly feature a monochromatic palette, subtly referencing the cyberpunk aesthetic found in films such as the cult classic Akira (1988). Her work investigates the interplay between humanity and technology; however, she approaches this exploration through two-dimensional mediums rather than sculpture. This conceptual framework is pushed to its limits as she engages with the 1980s fascination with cyborgs alongside contemporary preoccupations with the metaverse.

She aims to challenge prevailing stereotypes of East Asian women in art, drawing inspiration from the female characters depicted in anime, manga, and video games that resonate with her. During her time at art school, she gained a thorough understanding of the technical aspects of video game art, which gives her insight into both its creation and consumption. However, her primary interest lies in examining how these cultural representations shape global perceptions of East Asian women, who are often portrayed in one-dimensional ways. She seeks to “share that each and every individual has their own story”. emphasizing the importance of recognizing that real human women cannot be reduced to mere video game characters.

She critiques the seemingly harmless appearances of anime girls and K-pop idols, exploring their pursuit of artificial purity. To challenge this façade, she deconstructs cultural elements like faces and hairstyles, layering them on canvas. Using gel medium and oil paint, she creates surface glitches that act as artificial scars, transforming feminine forms into mineralized bodies with grotesquely distorted skin, revealing the complexities beneath idealized femininity.
