CON_ is pleased to present "AUTOFICTION," a solo exhibition by GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE, on view from Saturday, August 1 through Sunday, August 30, 2026. Taking "the city and its youth" as their subject, GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE has developed a conceptual, narrative-driven practice shaped by manga, film, and other currents of subculture. Since 2021, the artist has led JYU (獸), a seven-chapter, seven-year project fusing contemporary art exhibitions with live performance, unfolding—one chapter each year, in the form of an exhibition—the story of a youth in Tokyo who becomes a black beast. This exhibition is an attempt to crystallize JYU, which has until now expanded organically, and to present it as work. The octopus slide, pampas grass, painting, sculpture, video, drawing: each is a fragment cut from a different angle, and as they overlap, the contour of JYU gradually rises into view. Weaving fiction into reality to raise a story, the exhibition is at once a record of JYU and an attempt to preserve our lives as myth. Ahead of the opening, a preview will be held on Friday, July 31, 2–6 pm, followed by an opening reception from 6–9 pm. We very much hope to see you there. — Exhibition Title: AUTOFICTION / オートフィクション Artist: GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE @gillochindox Dates / 会期: 2026.8.1 (SAT) – 2026.8.30 (SUN) Preview: 2026.7.31 (FRI) 14:00–18:00 Opening Reception: 2026.7.31 (FRI) 18:00–21:00 Open Hours: Thu–Sun 14:00–19:00 Closed: Mon, Tue, Wed Design: Heijiro Yagi @heijiroyagi at: CON_ @con_tokyo_ maruka 4F, 2-2-14 Nihonbashi Bakurocho, Chuo-ku, Tokyo Open : Thu–Sun 14:00–19:00 Closed : Mon, Tue, Wed, public holidays, unless announced otherwise

Born in Tokyo in 1999. Graduated from the Department of Painting, Nihonga Course, Tama Art University. Currently lives and works in Tokyo. Taking "the city and youth" as their subject, they develop a conceptual, narrative-driven practice shaped by subculture — the seinen manga of the 1990s, death-game films and dramas. Their point of departure is a contrast: the danchi housing complexes and parks along the Tama River where they grew up, set against the high-rises of Machida and Shinjuku they came to know from their high school years onward. Colliding raw, matter-of-fact materials — scaffolding pipes, UV prints, resin, fur — with the lineage of pictorial expression, they generate images as mazarimono, admixtures condensed by forces of chance akin to accidents and disasters. Like a long-running serialized manga, their work records the shifting air of the city in real time. Since 2021, they have led JYU (獸), a long-form project fusing contemporary art exhibitions with live performance. The story of a protagonist who transforms into a black beast unfolds across seven chapters, presented as one exhibition each year. The narrative opens with a scene in which the beast is shot by a hunter. It is, in its way, an attempt to raise a myth in present-day Tokyo by a single pair of hands. Accepting change, oversight, and the fading of passion, the work continues to depict the fervor of each moment as it burns. Selected exhibitions include JYU (Chapter 3 / EDGE) (Kitanomaru Park, Tokyo, 2025), JYU (Chapter 2 / BEAUTIFUL DAYDREAM) (Maruka Building, Tokyo, 2024), ☆☆☆☆☆☆☆ (CON_, Tokyo, 2023), EASTEAST_TOKYO 2023 (Tokyo, 2023), JYU (Chapter 1 / 宝町団地) (CONTRAST, Tokyo, 2022), 極薄 inframince (CON_, Tokyo, 2022), JYU (Chapter 0 / 交叉時点) (BUoY, Tokyo, 2021), and Young Artist Exhibition 2021 (EUKARYOTE, Tokyo, 2021), among others.
- GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE "Prayer is made of words. Words make everything. Words are, in truth, God—they work miracles. It is because we have words that we can pray, wish, and hope even for what has already happened and ended. When we pray about the past, words become story. People write stories for many reasons. Many things happen, and we pray for many things. And sometimes we pray in the form of a novel. It is this prayer that works miracles, that makes hope shimmer over the past. Perhaps it can even grant that wish—within a story, within a novel." In an age when every event rushes past at tremendous speed, I felt there might be meaning in holding to a single axis, in thinking about the same thing over a long stretch of time. Since childhood I have traced my memories, making works and exhibitions as if driving stakes into each landscape, each event. When I ask myself why I keep doing this, one reason is resistance—resistance to the current in which everything is so quickly consumed. Moving moments, cruel incidents, disasters, even a person's death: all fade, in time, from conversation. Against that current, I want to create time in which to pause, however briefly. I sometimes recall the landscapes I saw as a child, the park where I played almost every day. But such places change, little by little. Houses rise on the empty lots; the site of my family home is now a parking lot; the danchi housing complex and the octopus-slide park will begin to be rebuilt this year. Each time the landscape changes, I feel as though the stakes that held up my memory are being pulled out. That is not to say I wish to preserve the landscape itself. I make works in order to give weight, once more, to time that flows away and to events being forgotten—to place them back within reality. This exhibition is an attempt to crystallize JYU, which has until now spread organically, and to present it as work. The octopus slide, pampas grass, painting, sculpture, video, drawing. Each is a fragment cut from a different angle, and as they overlap, the contour of JYU gradually rises into view. The landscapes someone has seen, the events they have lived through, the time they have accumulated—these belong to that person alone. Hayao Miyazaki is said to have remarked that what matters most lies within a radius of three meters. JYU is built from a radius of thirty meters that contains those three: from me, from the friends and family around me, and beyond them, from the landscapes and environments that surround us all, and the time and experience each of us has lived. By weaving fiction into reality to raise a story, we can preserve the past with a beauty closer to sensation, and give another form to wishes that reality never granted. It is not mere record; it is an attempt to preserve our lives as myth. This exhibition is a record of JYU, and at the same time, a fragment of our myth. - GILLOCHINDOX☆GILLOCHINDAE
